Amelia Island Community Theatre

Amelia Island Community Theatre was founded in 1981, with eighty-one Charter Members. They currently have over five hundred Season Ticket subscribers, and have completed a new state of the art theatre building.

Amelia Community Theatre has always enjoyed strong community support and loyal audiences.

Productions at A.C.T. include four Main Stage productions (included in the Season Ticket subscription) plus Readers’ Theatre, 4-H/ACT Teen Theatre, the Peppermint Players (a touring troupe that performs free shows for children,) Children’s Workshops, Melodrama/Vaudeville, and Armchair Actors. Amelia Community Theatre is located in Fernandina Beach, on Amelia Island, Florida. The address is 209 Cedar Street, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034. From Centre Street, the heart of Fernandina’s Historic District, turn left onto Third Street and go just three short blocks to find us – within easy walking distance of the Harbor Marina. Our immediate neighbor is the Amelia Island Museum, and together we form a strong corner of creativity and culture.

Amelia Island Modern History

A Scottishman named Sir Gregor MacGregor with the support of some key Americans ran the Spanish off Amelia island in 1817 and later raised the “Green Cross of Florida” flag. However, because of lack of reinforcements and funds he left and his lieutenants became in charge. They made a deal with Frenchman Luis Aury (a soldier in the Mexican Revolution) in order to get support to maintain their control. However, Aury, in return for giving them support wanted to command the island and so raised the Mexican flag. The town came into such a state of bedlam that the U.S. government sent gunboats and took control and held Amelia Island in trust for Spain until Florida became a U.S. territory on July 10, 1821.
